Information on the Music Therapy Profession
Music Therapy is a clinical and evidence-based health profession in which
a Music Therapist-Board Certified (credentialed MT-BC) uses music interventions to accomplish individualized goals
within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals
(AMTA, 2016; www.musictherapy.org).

Professional
Organizations

Music therapists have two professional organizations.

Our certifying agency is the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT, www.cbmt.org). The board certification exam and credential MT-BC have been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) since 1986.

Our national membership organization is the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) whose mission is to advance the "education, training, professional standards, credentials, and research in support of the music therapy profession" (www.musictherapy.org).

Music Therapists'
Credentials

Music therapists earn the credential MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified) after successful completion of
  • an approved music therapy degree program (over 75 in the U.S.)
  • 1,200 hours of supervised clinical training (practica & an internship)
  • and the board certification exam administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
Music therapists receive rigorous academic training in courses such as Anatomy & Physiology, Advanced and Abnormal Psychology, and Child Development, in addition to substantial coursework in music. They must also demonstrate collegiate proficiencies in music theory, voice, guitar, and keyboard.

Professional Publications

Music therapists have two peer-reviewed, empirical research journals that are published by Oxford University Press (http://global.oup.com/?cc=us). They are the
  • Journal of Music Therapy and
  • Music Therapy Perspectives.

Other publications include Imagine magazine and AMTA’s quarterly newsletter  Music Therapy Matters.

AMTA and CBMT jointly publish the Music Therapy Scope of Practice (2015), and AMTA also publishes the Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics, Professional Competencies, and Standards for Education and Clinical Training.
